Mark Phillips (00:00.822)
Hey gang, this is Mark from Graveside Entertainment, and today my special guest is Canadian artist Rachel Gosling. Rachel is an artist that works with chalk and wildly bleached to make crazy cool shirt designs and all sorts of horror and metal inspired stuff, and runs an Etsy store also with her art creations. Thanks a lot for joining us, Rachel.

Rachel Gosling (00:23.339)
Thank you for having me.

Mark Phillips (00:25.216)
All right. So wanna let everybody know, how did you get started with your art and how did you kind of learn this this pretty unique medium of creating these shirts and artwork that you do?

Rachel Gosling (00:37.839)
I just kinda picked it up one day. I’ve always like kinda had the idea in the back of my head and I wanted to try it but I never kinda did it. And then one day I was just like, Why don’t I just try it? and then and then people kinda liked it, so I kept doing it.

Mark Phillips (00:57.952)
It’s really unique and your shirts and your designs are are super detailed and do do other people in the medium do other people do art this way or is this something that’s kinda like uniquely yours?

Rachel Gosling (01:10.814)
no, I’ve seen a lot of different people use use bleach to paint on shirts and other fabrics. there’s this one Instagram artist I I like, I can’t remember her name for the life of me, but she’s really cool. I think it’s Nikita something. she she’s r she’s really good with the with the bleach. Yeah.

Mark Phillips (01:37.294)
Cool. That’s awesome. Yeah. It’s such a unique medium and your designs are super detailed and pretty cool. so how is that going? Is that is that essentially what you want to do? so is it is it like a side project and a hobby, kind of like how this is for me, or is it something that you want to turn into like a full-time gig? What what is that looking like?

Rachel Gosling (01:44.024)
Thank you.

Rachel Gosling (01:58.809)
well, yeah, it’s kind of like a side thing right now. I haven’t I haven’t had a lot of time to do it with working with animals and everything constantly, so I’ve been super busy, but yeah, I’d like to I’d like it to be my full time thing ’cause it’s what I’m it’s what I’m good at and it’s what I what I care about.

Mark Phillips (02:23.0)
Have you always have you always been into in into art and and and being creative and and especially like in the visual aspects like your whole life, or is it something that you picked up as you got older?

Rachel Gosling (02:34.362)
I’ve always kinda liked it. like I’ve I can remember doing little art projects when I was younger and stuff. just silly ones, but I mean, I’ve always felt the best when I do that. and then when I was like I think I was like twenty two or something, twenty three, I started doing it again. I was like, why don’t I just try to paint something that I actually like? And I painted Pennywise and then

I just I haven’t stopped really since then.

Mark Phillips (03:07.342)
That’s super cool. So did you come from an artistic family, like your mom and dad artists or creative types, or do you have any relatives, brothers, sisters that do it?

Rachel Gosling (03:15.815)
Yeah, my dad was he’s very artistic. He can draw and he was a musician and all of that. My brother’s a musician. My mom my mom can draw really well. my grandparents were painters as well.

Mark Phillips (03:36.754)
wow. So it’s like you you just have been born into it, it runs in the family lineage.

Rachel Gosling (03:41.042)
I guess so. Yeah.

Mark Phillips (03:43.49)
That’s pretty sweet. What what kind of musician is your dad? What does he do?

Rachel Gosling (03:50.83)
he he played the drums, when he was younger and stuff. He had a band and everything. my brother plays guitar for As the Structure Fails and I think he’s doing his own his own stuff as well. Yeah.

Mark Phillips (04:10.446)
Sweet. So i is is that is that a metal band that your brother’s in or awesome. And what are they called? They’re called As the Structure Fails. I’ll have to check them out. Cool. Are they on Spotify and all the streaming platforms and stuff? Nice. Nice. That’s cool. And what about what about your dad? What kind of bands did he play in?

Rachel Gosling (04:15.867)
Yeah, yeah.

Rachel Gosling (04:19.878)
Yeah.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (04:32.697)
Mm.

Rachel Gosling (04:37.592)
He was more like more like rock, like classic rock. I know he I know he covered Siggy Stardust before. just yeah, just songs like that. I’ve got like in one of his old school tapes in my drawer.

Mark Phillips (04:48.118)
Cool.

Mark Phillips (04:57.364)
from the band that he made? that’s sweet. Wow. Awesome. That’s so cool. Wicked. So we you was there always like music playing in your house and stuff and your parents always listening to tunes and things? Yeah. That’s so cool. That’s awesome. So what kind of music do you like?

Rachel Gosling (04:59.085)
Yeah. Like on a little cassette tape. Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (05:11.481)
Yeah, yeah. Always. Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (05:20.494)
I kinda like I kinda like everything. Like my brother always jokes that my my playlist is just so bipolar. Yeah, it’s it’s a little bit of everything, but I mean I mostly listen to there’s a lot of metal on there. I d I honestly I now that I’m thinking about it I can’t even think of like what’s ’cause there’s so many things I don’t

Mark Phillips (05:31.768)
Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (05:49.904)
I don’t know, but a lot of metal. There’s a lot of metal on there. I love Led Zeppelin as well. Led Zeppelin’s one of my favorites. Yeah.

Mark Phillips (05:52.405)
Awesome. Yeah, that’s good’s a good way to start. Yeah. So what were the first bands that you kind of got into and started listening to to to get into like rock and metal music?

Rachel Gosling (06:06.011)
I mean well because my dad always played that type of music, I was always listening to like Led Zeppelin and stuff. But I mean I’m I’m an emo kid at heart. So So I was always listening to like Three Days Grace and like AFI and fans like that.

Mark Phillips (06:20.552)
Mark Phillips (06:28.878)
Are are those are those bands considered emo bands?

Rachel Gosling (06:33.095)
I would I would think so. Yeah, maybe

Mark Phillips (06:34.902)
Yeah. Yeah. I I I didn’t even know what emo was because emo wasn’t a thing. Like when when I was growing up, it was like those metal bands and punk bands. I think emo is kind of a newer thing. So yeah. I I know all those bands like AFI and stuff. I I I like them too. I I would I I’m my in my ignorance of it, I would just be like, it’s just punk and then like three days grace. I always heard them on the radio and stuff, especially when they first came out.

Rachel Gosling (06:47.895)
Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (07:03.713)
Yeah.

Mark Phillips (07:04.77)
Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (07:07.0)
Yeah, like the the used and everything. I love the used. They were really good.

Mark Phillips (07:09.944)
Yeah.

Yeah, for sure. So so what is the the main stuff that you’re listening to now, like your favorite bands that you’re you’re the pretty much the ones that you always go back to and check out the most?

Rachel Gosling (07:24.365)
I like Alpha Wolf. I like I I don’t know how to say this band’s name though they’re they’re like my favorite band. Coop Koop icon. Yeah. I don’t know if that’s how you say it or not. I always just Yeah. Yeah. The ma the vocalist is a tattoo artist as well, so that’s pretty cool. Yeah.

Mark Phillips (07:38.846)
okay, yeah. Kubricon, yeah. Yeah.

I think so. I don’t know. I I’m assuming that they yeah. Yeah.

nice, that’s cool.

I haven’t heard a lot of their stuff. I’ve I know I I I think they were are they recently in the news they were getting in trouble or something or people were yeah, this people I don’t know, complaining of being angry or something. I don’t know. S some one one of the guys in the band said something, I don’t know what he said, but it was like perceived as being too right wing and so there’s a bunch of people that are upset and they’re in yeah, they’re in the news for it and stuff. I’m like, ugh.

Rachel Gosling (08:02.917)
gosh, I don’t know.

Rachel Gosling (08:17.579)
Yeah.

Yeah. Well I feel like you can’t really say anything these days without getting in trouble, so Yeah.

Mark Phillips (08:24.648)
Exactly. It it’s it’s the state of the world, I’m afraid. Like you can’t you can’t have a difference of opinion or disagree with anyone or say anything that, you know, isn’t popular or mainstream without it’s it’s you can get cancelled otherwise.

Rachel Gosling (08:36.159)
Yep. Yeah. Exactly.

Mark Phillips (08:40.77)
Yeah, it’s crazy. So so you mentioned before you jumped on the call here, like when we before we started recording that you’re looking at you wanting to become a tattoo artist. You wanna tell us more about that?

Rachel Gosling (08:53.481)
Yeah, I’ve I I don’t I’ve my boyfriend got me a tattoo machine b around Christmas time. so I’ve been practicing on fake skin and everything. Before that I was practicing designs trying to get an apprenticeship. but now I’m I’m dabbling in my leg, so I started doing a theme.

Mark Phillips (09:15.064)
How how different does it how different does it feel like doing tattoos and tattooing on fake skin than like doing artwork on traditional mediums and canvases?

Rachel Gosling (09:27.023)
gosh, it’s so different. It’s ’cause you have to control it a lot more, right? Like and there’s so much that goes into it. It’s so difficult. When I first started I’m like, I don’t know if I can do this. But I’m getting better, so

Mark Phillips (09:41.366)
What kind of tattoos are you gonna specialize in?

Rachel Gosling (09:45.33)
I’m kind of into the traditional maybe neotraditional. yeah, I I think neo traditional. Yeah.

Mark Phillips (09:55.309)
Yeah. Do you have some favorite tattoo artists that you look to for inspiration and ideas and follow?

Rachel Gosling (10:04.13)
yeah, one that’s done a lot of my work, Monica. She’s in Toronto. I haven’t gone to her in a while ’cause she opened her own shop further away from me, so I haven’t been able to go. But yeah, her name’s Monica Darling on Instagram. She’s really good. Yeah.

Mark Phillips (10:25.678)
Cool. What kind of tattoos does she do? Do do you have can you just show the camera like do you have any on your arms or anything that she’s done?

Mark Phillips (10:37.334)
They should do all those.

Rachel Gosling (10:38.561)
All of those. Yeah, she did all of these. there’s my shark here. She did that. Yeah.

Mark Phillips (10:46.636)
Sweet. Yeah, those are really nice and bright and colorful and yeah, cool. Awesome.

Yeah, that’s good. I feel like tattoos have have evolved so much from even ten, fifteen years ago. Like it was it was pretty uncommon even how long, you know, maybe twenty years ago to see people covered with tattoos unless they were like probably in a metal band, in a rock band or, you know, a biker of sorts, and now it’s just become absolutely so mainstream and commonplace. You see like grandmas and grandpas walking around with ink these days.

Rachel Gosling (11:12.098)
Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (11:20.94)
Yeah, I love that. Yeah.

Mark Phillips (11:22.698)
Yeah. And it’s crazy, right? It’s like even like waiters and waitresses at like high end restaurants and expensive restaurants are all inked up and it’s I think it’s kind of become become like earrings, right? Where it’s just regular and nobody really thinks anything of it these days.

Rachel Gosling (11:38.495)
Yeah. Yeah, definitely. I mean I remember like trying to get a job earlier on when even when I had like just one my parents were like, I don’t know if you can I don’t know if you can get anything with that. It’s like now it’s like my boss has a tattoo, what you talking about?

Mark Phillips (11:49.71)
Yeah.

Mark Phillips (11:57.311)
Exactly. Yeah. Yeah, it was the same for me. I remember when I got my first tattoo, my dad was just blown away. He was so disappointed and he was like, You look like a friggin’ convict, man. Like, what are you doing? Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (12:06.881)
Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (12:11.78)
Yeah. Yeah, my dad wasn’t too happy with me either.

Mark Phillips (12:15.266)
So yeah, I ha my my daughter is sixteen, so and and she’s like very she’s the chip off the old block. So she’s into into metal and she’s she plays guitar and bass in bands and she got her hair dyed jet black and she’s an artist as well. She’s always drawing and creating stuff and she was around me and her mom, so she’s used to like having metal on all the time and stuff. So I didn’t really think she would go any other direction. the

Rachel Gosling (12:33.06)
yeah.

Rachel Gosling (12:44.37)
Yeah.

Mark Phillips (12:44.898)
That’s what she’s talking about wanting to do is she wants to be a tattoo artist as well and is just absolutely in love with the idea of of tattooing and and being creative and and artistic, which is cool and I support. I just I just wanna make sure it’s done in a safe manner and she’s not gonna get exploited or anything out there, right?

Rachel Gosling (13:02.75)
Yeah, for sure. Yeah.

Mark Phillips (13:07.214)
Yeah, I think the business has changed a lot too in the sense that you know, the the tattoo parlors that I went to when I was getting tattoos is like a young man not even of legal age to get tattoos yet, where you go in and it’s like, Hey, how old are you? Are you eighteen? It’s like, yeah, I’m eighteen for sure. And they don’t check, don’t ask, they just get it done. Those are the kind of places that it’s like I I

Rachel Gosling (13:26.069)
Yeah.

Mark Phillips (13:29.548)
don’t wouldn’t want her working in those places, but I don’t think they exist anymore because all the places that I’ve been there’s a cat peeking in there. That’s so cute. All the all the places that I’ve been now have been like they look like doctor’s offices inside. They’re so clean and so professional. They have receptionists and it’s just really changed so much.

Rachel Gosling (13:36.466)
Yeah, sorry.

Rachel Gosling (13:48.774)
Yeah. Yeah. No, as it should be too, ’cause you are doing medical procedures technically, right?

Mark Phillips (13:56.771)
Yeah, there used to be tattoo parlors, and I say tattoo parlors in quotation marks because they some of them you go down like dirt steps into the basement to get tattooed like it by like an old biker dude that, you know, looks like he’s got everything under the sun and you’re like, oof. Just gotta make sure that you see that bag of new needles get opened up and it’s all fresh, and you’re not yeah, it doesn’t exist today, thankfully, at least at least not to my knowledge. I mean, maybe people are still doing

Rachel Gosling (14:07.143)
God.

Rachel Gosling (14:13.469)
Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (14:17.726)
Yeah.

Ha ha ha.

Mark Phillips (14:25.816)
tattoos at home and stuff, but as far as the places that are reputable here and we go, they yeah, they’re nice. Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (14:28.411)
Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (14:31.953)
Yeah. Yeah, no, it is definitely better than it used to be.

Mark Phillips (14:36.632)
Yeah. Yeah, you’ve taken your life in your own hands back in the day getting a tattoo. It’s like, am I gonna die in six months of hepatitis or get AIDS or something? You know, you never know what you’re gonna get. Yeah. Yeah, my first tattoo, I just went in and picked something off the wall. It was super lame. Like me and my buddies just decided we were gonna go and it’s like, What do you want to get? I was like, I don’t know, I’ll figure it out when I get there. We’re all just going to get something. And it was more the experience of going to get a tattoo and doing it rather than

Rachel Gosling (14:40.891)
Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (14:47.997)
Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (15:01.67)
Yeah.

Mark Phillips (15:07.688)
It being memorable. So I got one and then I didn’t do another one for like twenty years because I was like, I don’t want to get stuff that doesn’t mean anything to me. So I’m gonna stay away from it.

Rachel Gosling (15:17.403)
Yeah. Yeah. My first my first tattoo was in some guy’s basement when I was fifteen, so Yeah.

Mark Phillips (15:23.123)
That sounds similar to the one that I got. Yeah. Did you get it covered up since or worked on or

Rachel Gosling (15:31.001)
No, it’s still there. Yeah.

Mark Phillips (15:32.238)
Still there, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Mine too. It’s on my leg and it’s like this is my regret. Like, this is what I did when I was I think I was seventeen when I got mine and I was like, man, I I one day I gotta get something done with it and change it.

Rachel Gosling (15:46.288)
Yeah. Well I was supposed to get mine with a bunch of my friends but they they’re like ’cause I had two best girlfriends in high school and I went and got mine done, then they got something completely different done. And I was not I was not pleased. I was

Mark Phillips (16:04.91)
Did you all get them done in the same place though in the basement?

Rachel Gosling (16:08.694)
No, no, they no they got them done somewhere else.

Mark Phillips (16:12.268)
did they did they get them like done in a more legit credible place that was less sketchy or no more of the same?

Rachel Gosling (16:17.101)
No, definitely not. No. Just a different guy, different baseman.

Mark Phillips (16:22.292)
different basement. Yeah, that’s that’s that’d be a great name for it to start out. Yeah, different basement tattoos. Yeah. Yeah. So as far as as your tasted movies and stuff go, I noticed that on your on your Instagram you have some some stuff from it. You got Pennywise, you got some terrifier stuff with Art the Clown on it. what what kind of other stuff are you into, horror wise?

Rachel Gosling (16:26.437)
Ha ha

Rachel Gosling (16:32.816)
Yeah

Rachel Gosling (16:52.048)
gosh, I love it all. I love I love Scream, I love Ghostface. I’ve actually got a tattoo of him right here. Yeah. what else do I have? I’ve done the nun.

Mark Phillips (17:01.302)
Nice. Sweet. Sweet. That’s cool.

Mark Phillips (17:10.883)
the nun is super creepy and good. Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (17:12.873)
Yeah. I’ve got I’ve got work at Coffin Creek. It’s a cafe around here, it’s a horror cafe. yeah, it’s really cool. yeah, they have my artwork up in their shop. So Yeah, they’ve got a few things. I’ve done Jaws. I don’t know, I’ve done so many I can’t even remember them.

Mark Phillips (17:18.292)
Mm-hmm. Really?

Mark Phillips (17:26.933)
Awesome, that’s so cool.

Mark Phillips (17:39.15)
So is it like a coffee shop that’s horror themed? Really?

Rachel Gosling (17:42.272)
Yeah, yeah, it’s really cool. Yeah.

Mark Phillips (17:45.785)
So w what is the what is the daily activities look like there? So like people come in, is it essentially like you go in, you get coffee, you get food, like Starbucks or Tim’s or whatever, but it’s got like cool horror artwork and does it do they have mute like creepy like music on and stuff? They play in like Bauhouse and stuff like that and they got does it have a vibe to it?

Rachel Gosling (18:04.75)
well I don’t really I don’t know if I can’t think of the music, but I mean the vibe is definitely there. It’s it’s got different mannequins of different horror villains everywhere. they have horror themed coffee, they have horror themed drinks, skull croissants. Yeah, it’s really cool. I love going in there.

Mark Phillips (18:29.25)
That is so cool.

Mark Phillips (18:33.676)
And who owns the joint?

Rachel Gosling (18:36.334)
no. I don’t know their I don’t know their name, but I because I just I just speak to like Coffin Creek on Instagram whenever I talk to them. Yeah. Yeah.

Mark Phillips (18:46.134)
Yeah, yeah. That’s a really cool name too. That’s awesome. It’s funny that you mentioned that because when when I I started my horror stuff, like I had a horror shop here in Edmonton from 2004 to the end of two thousand six. And when when I opened it, I met some clients. Like before I opened the shop, I started and I was running like a booth in the flea market just to see if there was a demand and if people were into the stuff. And

Rachel Gosling (19:15.254)
Mm.

Mark Phillips (19:16.266)
One of the one of the customers at the flea market was like, You should open a horror coffee shop. And I was like, That’s insanity. Like how would that ever work? I I d I don’t understand. That’s like taking two things that don’t mix at all. Like I was I thought it was the craziest idea I’d ever heard. I was like horror and coffee’s weird.

Rachel Gosling (19:32.106)
Yeah. Well it’s crazy how much horror people love coffee, right?

Mark Phillips (19:36.556)
I guess, yeah. But I mean I think everybody loves coffee though, right? Like coffee’s so good.

Rachel Gosling (19:41.663)
Yeah, yeah. That’s true.

Mark Phillips (19:44.856)
But for me, like yeah, a hundred percent. I would much rather go to a place like that than Tim’s or Starbucks or any of those crappy joints. Like I’d totally rather go to a place that has atmosphere and is horror related.

Rachel Gosling (19:56.928)
Yeah, and they do they sell like a bunch of small businesses there too, so but like there’s a bunch of other like there’s T shirts, there’s mugs, there’s they sell a bunch of different stuff there. Yeah.

Mark Phillips (20:07.16)
That is so cool. That’s awesome. That’s that’s that’s one of the really cool things about having small little specialty shops is just how unique and original they are and not a lot of them left anymore. There’s hardly any of that stuff happening around.

Rachel Gosling (20:20.904)
Yeah. Yeah, for sure.

Mark Phillips (20:24.278)
Yeah. Yeah, I ran my shop for like the three years there and I had to shut it down ’cause I just wasn’t busy enough. And when I closed down, it was awful. It was like that was my dream, like since I was a kid to have my own shop and do it. And I loved it and like I met my wife through the shop and like I have friends still, like geez, like yeah, twenty years later it’s been, that I met through the shop. But man, it was that that’s kinda like

Rachel Gosling (20:31.466)
huh.

Rachel Gosling (20:46.238)
Mm-hmm.

Mark Phillips (20:50.86)
I would love to get back there again. I would love to be able to open a shop and and just be there every day ’cause that was like my happy place, just talking about horror and metal all day is that’s not work.

Rachel Gosling (21:00.754)
Yeah, exactly.

Mark Phillips (21:03.15)
It’s a good time. And it’s like it’s cool because everybody that comes in, like, you’re all into the same stuff, you know. So it was it was just like hanging out with buddies and friends. We’d do movie nights and stuff every Monday night. We’d have pick another crazy B movie off the shelf. And I’d have a futon and like a T V and a V C R and a DVD player at the back of the shop. And we would just hang out and watch flicks and drink beers cause there was a liquor store next door. And yeah, it was good times.

Rachel Gosling (21:09.116)
Okay.

Rachel Gosling (21:28.521)
Yeah. Well that sounds cool.

Mark Phillips (21:32.046)
Yeah, it was fun.

Yeah, so it’s it’s pretty neat. It’s I’m I’m glad that it’s coming back. It seems like it’s it’s horror is bigger now than ever, like with obsession blowing up in the theaters and being so popular. I still need to get out and see it. I’m just waiting to have some time to go. Have you seen it?

Rachel Gosling (21:49.543)
Yeah, I haven’t seen it. No, no. Not yet.

Mark Phillips (21:54.794)
It looks pretty good and the reviews are good.

Rachel Gosling (21:58.097)
Yeah. No, I keep seeing good things about it.

Mark Phillips (22:00.609)
Yeah. People are shitting all over the new scary movie though. Apparently they’re saying it’s horrid.

Rachel Gosling (22:07.624)
I mean it’s kinda to be expected, right? I I still wanna see it.

Mark Phillips (22:13.184)
Right? Yeah, like I don’t know. Yeah, I mean I I’ve the original scary movies are hilarious. Like they’re so funny and yeah, I mean it’s it’s crude and gross out humor, but that’s that’s right up my alley. So it’s like cool, let’s let’s go and watch that, right?

Rachel Gosling (22:20.231)
Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (22:28.678)
Yeah, exactly.

Mark Phillips (22:30.176)
I hope it delivers more of the same, but I don’t know. Lots of reviews are saying it’s not funny and stuff and I’m like, I don’t know, I’m gonna have to go see it myself. I find as I get older my my tastes change so much that I don’t I don’t really trust the reviews anymore. I’m just like I gotta figure it out on my

Rachel Gosling (22:45.859)
Yeah, exactly. I don’t usually agree with the reviews.

Mark Phillips (22:49.762)
Has there been any movies that you can think of? Sorry for putting you on the spot with this, but for the t off the top of your head that like had so much hype and so much build up that were supposed to be amazing and you saw it and it was just a huge letdown.

Rachel Gosling (23:05.303)
Rachel Gosling (23:10.759)
there’s that one what was it called? It was with James Franco’s little brother and his wife.

Mark Phillips (23:19.866)
Together?

Rachel Gosling (23:21.936)
That one. Yeah.

Mark Phillips (23:24.096)
Yeah. That one didn’t hit home for you.

Rachel Gosling (23:27.308)
No, it the is so stupid.

Mark Phillips (23:30.218)
Yeah, the the ending was yeah, they they didn’t have a pleasant, happy ending for sure.

Rachel Gosling (23:37.447)
No, I feel like they could have gone so many different directions with it too. and that Ugh, that other one with the little little dead girl walking around with the shaved head.

Mark Phillips (23:48.593)
yeah, yeah. I just saw that one. Yes. Yes. That one was pretty, pretty dark and creepy.

Rachel Gosling (23:49.902)
You know that one? Yeah. Yeah.

Yeah, but it had so much potential and I was just bored the whole time.

Mark Phillips (24:02.274)
Yeah. Yeah, that’s how I feel about long legs.

Rachel Gosling (24:07.31)
Yeah. Yeah. There was one part in it that scared me, but it it was like the very beginning. But that that was it. And then it was just downhill from there.

Mark Phillips (24:09.166)
Because I thought

Yeah.

Mark Phillips (24:17.694)
I find it tough, right? ‘Cause you get the trailer and it’s like, man, Nicholas Cage looks so awesome and so creepy and the character looks so interesting and then barely get to see that character. Like there’s not a lot of him in the movie. It’s just, you know, suggestive and in the shadows and stuff. And I’m like, no, I don’t I don’t like that. I d I wanna I wanna see the cool characters and have as much time with them as possible.

Rachel Gosling (24:24.345)
Mm-hmm.

Rachel Gosling (24:31.501)
Mm-hmm.

Rachel Gosling (24:42.915)
Yeah. Yeah. I g I mean I guess that’s kind of what they were going for ’cause that’s still kinda creepy if you think about it. ‘Cause like you kinda know what he looks like and you don’t really know where he is. You know what I mean? But still it’s it was a miss.

Mark Phillips (24:49.837)
Mm-hmm.

Mark Phillips (24:53.613)
Yeah.

Mark Phillips (24:57.836)
Yeah. Yeah, and and that’s how I felt like the first time I saw being, you know, when when the Blair Witch project came out, ’cause it was so hyped up. Everybody was talking about how terrifying it was. It was kind of like the first found footage movie that was ever people were like, What is this? Is it legit? Is it real? And then I watched the movie with my buddy and his wife and I’m like there was no payoff at the end. Like I I wanted to see the witch. I wanted to see all the

Rachel Gosling (25:08.142)
Mm-hmm.

Mark Phillips (25:26.358)
No payoff. I’m like, I just feel like I’ve wasted my time here.

Rachel Gosling (25:27.736)
Yeah. Yeah. Every time I try to watch that movie I I feel like I just like zone out and I can’t I still don’t think I’ve watched the entire thing because because I just zone out. It doesn’t get me at all.

Mark Phillips (25:43.223)
I like it when they I like it when they parody movies like that. I can’t remember what movie it was from. Maybe it was on the scary movie. When they had the girl up close on the camera and her nose is like bloop, bloop bloop, just dripping non stop. Like that stuff is so simple, but it’s so funny. Like it’s just hilarious. Yeah. that’s funny.

Rachel Gosling (25:49.995)
Yeah.

Yeah. Yeah, I think that was a scary movie.

Rachel Gosling (26:04.949)
Yeah, that that gets me. I like that.

Mark Phillips (26:11.436)
Yeah, so I hope that the new scary movie is I hope it’s good ’cause it’s been a long time. Like they haven’t released a scary movie for forever.

Rachel Gosling (26:20.694)
Yeah. Yeah. Well I mean everybody’s I feel like everybody’s humor is so different now that then they’re just sticking with the same kind of thing. They don’t I don’t know. So that’s why I want to see it for myself because I don’t trust anybody.

Mark Phillips (26:27.894)
Yeah.

Mark Phillips (26:36.758)
Yeah, I think I feel like everybody gets offended at things very easily today and complains a lot about stuff. And I’m I’m hoping that that that’s where the negative reviews are coming from and it’s not I’m hoping that it’s like not people that that would be their audience anyway, that they’re going for. Cause it’s like if I see it I’m hoping that I’m like, Yeah, this is a great movie, it’s funny as hell, you know, it’s stupid, but it’s making me laugh.

Rachel Gosling (26:47.798)
Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (27:00.051)
Yeah, yeah, exactly.

Mark Phillips (27:02.392)
Do you play video games?

Rachel Gosling (27:05.471)
Yeah. Yeah.

Mark Phillips (27:07.008)
So you know like borderlands and stuff?

Rachel Gosling (27:10.337)
I don’t play Borderlands. My boyfriend plays Borderlands, but

Mark Phillips (27:13.73)
How does he feel about the humor and the trajectory of Borderlands over the years? Because I feel like that’s what’s happened to Borderlands. Like the original ones were so funny and so offensive and off the wall. And these new ones, they water them down so much. It feels like they’ve been made by a corporate committee instead of people that are like, it’s okay if we offend our audience.

Rachel Gosling (27:35.262)
Honestly, I have no idea.

Mark Phillips (27:36.526)
You should ask him when you when you see him say, Hey, how do you feel about the comedy and Borderlands 4 compared to like something like Borderlands 2? Because for me it just it didn’t hit. I was like, it’s so watered down and it’s just it’s not good anymore.

Rachel Gosling (27:46.622)
I will.

Rachel Gosling (27:53.278)
Yeah. Yeah, I don’t know. I wish I could speak on that, but I don’t really know.

Mark Phillips (27:58.531)
So what games do you like for for in your interest in video games?

Rachel Gosling (28:03.648)
I’ve been I’ve been playing Stardy Valley a lot, but I just got It’s addictive.

Mark Phillips (28:10.926)
I play Sturdy Valley as well.

I showed it to my buddy and he’s like, What are you playing, dude? I’m like, dude, it’s chill and relaxing. Don’t worry about it. I’m just dealing with my phone. Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (28:23.315)
Like just try it. It’s like a gateway drug. I’ve my boyfriend just got me actually a Switch too. So I’ve been playing Po Pocopia. I’m obsessed with it.

Mark Phillips (28:27.768)
It is.

Mark Phillips (28:33.517)
Yeah, yeah.

Mark Phillips (28:38.08)
Okay.

What’s that what’s that one about?

Rachel Gosling (28:43.185)
It’s basically Stardew Valley, but it’s Pokemon. Yeah. It’s great.

Mark Phillips (28:46.256)
okay.

See, I missed the entire Pokemon stuff because I’m too old for Pokemon. I when Pokemon hit, I was I think I was probably in junior high or high school. So it was I was already past it.

Rachel Gosling (28:53.119)
Ha ha ha.

Rachel Gosling (29:00.436)
Well, it’s really fun.

Mark Phillips (29:01.998)
But I know how much yeah, I know, I know I s I know how much people love it. And like I’ve worked with tons of people that are obsessed with Pokemon. Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (29:10.077)
Yeah. I am. but I but I play I play Playstation too. Ghost of Tsushima.

Mark Phillips (29:18.643)
yeah, that’s so good.

Rachel Gosling (29:20.241)
Yeah, that’s probably my favorite one.

Mark Phillips (29:22.252)
Yeah. I haven’t played the new one yet. What’s it called? Like Ghost of Yochai or something?

Rachel Gosling (29:27.536)
Yeah, it goes with Yote. It’s so good. I love it.

Mark Phillips (29:31.338)
Is it better than ghost to Tsushima? Is it? Jeez, I’m gonna have to pick it up then.

Rachel Gosling (29:33.532)
Yeah. Yeah, for sure.

Yeah, you got it. It’s so good.

Mark Phillips (29:40.778)
Yeah, I think I I finished Ghost of Tsushima and I even played like the multiplayer modes where you can like pick different characters and stuff and play co op with a friend.

Rachel Gosling (29:50.371)
yeah. See I don’t I don’t have any friends that play that, so

Mark Phillips (29:51.085)
Yeah.

It was so good. Yeah, it was such a wicked game. Yeah. So if the new one’s even better, I’ll definitely pick it up ’cause I I yeah, I I was really invested into Ghost of Tsushima. The the combat in it’s amazing.

Rachel Gosling (30:05.145)
yeah. Yeah. It yeah, you yeah, you should for sure. It’s it’s like the first one’s really good, but the second one is just like chef’s kiss. Yeah.

Mark Phillips (30:14.52)
Sweet. That’s awesome. So if you like Stardew Valley and you like those kind of farming simulator kind of chill life things, have you ever played Graveyard Keeper?

Rachel Gosling (30:27.076)
No.

Mark Phillips (30:28.258)
That’s like Stardew Valley, but instead of looking after your farm, you’re looking after a graveyard, and your your buddy is like this skull and he just wants beer all the time and he he always swears and and it’s super hilarious. And yeah, you just inter corpses. So like a donkey will come up to the graveyard and he’ll start talking to you. He’ll drop a corpse off of his cart and then you pick up the corpse, take it into your

little mausoleum area and you have to like embalm it and then bury it and you have to maintain the graveyard. It’s so good.

Rachel Gosling (31:03.164)
That’s hilarious.

I wanna try that. What’s it called?

Mark Phillips (31:08.472)
Graveyard Keeper.

Rachel Gosling (31:10.626)
okay, I’m gonna try that for sure.

Mark Phillips (31:13.058)
And they have all different like expansions for it and they’re all named after like pop culture things. Like they have an expansion that’s named after like Game of Thrones, one that’s named after Stranger Things, like it’s one that’s c one named after Better Call Saul. Like it’s super, super awesome.

Rachel Gosling (31:28.078)
Yeah. That’s cool. We’ll definitely try that.

Mark Phillips (31:30.7)
I play it on my switch too, so I’ll be like laying in bed watching TV and just like maintaining my graveyard. Yeah, it’s good. The switch too’s amazing now. Like it’s it’s a big jump from Switch one. Like I I the graphics are so good. Like just last night I was playing Cyberpunk on it, and I’m like, man, I can’t believe it’s running Cyberpunk on the Switch. That’s wild.

Rachel Gosling (31:34.777)
Yeah.

Yeah. That’s how you gotta do it.

Rachel Gosling (31:57.485)
Yeah, that’s a good game. I like that one.

Mark Phillips (31:59.469)
Yeah, it’s awesome.

The graphics are so good and the story and just the gameplay, it’s wicked.

Rachel Gosling (32:07.917)
Yeah, that’s good. I like that one a lot. I have that one on Playstation.

Mark Phillips (32:11.884)
Yeah. It looks awesome too. When it came out, it was an absolute nightmare. Like I bought it, I think it came out on my birthday years ago. And I bought it the day it came out and it was so bad. It was so glitchy and buggy, I couldn’t even play it. I just left it and let it sit on the shelf for like two years until they finished updating it and patching it and then went back to it. And now holy shit, is it good? Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (32:14.363)
Well

Rachel Gosling (32:31.994)
Mm.

Mm.

Mark Phillips (32:37.922)
So you mentioned before when we were talking that you do stuff with animals. So what is that?

Rachel Gosling (32:44.844)
I do dog walking and house sitting like I’m doing right now.

Mark Phillips (32:48.701)
nice. What what kind of dogs do you take for walks?

Rachel Gosling (32:55.946)
any dogs that’ll let me. a lot of doodles. A lot of doodles.

Mark Phillips (33:03.16)
Doodles, yeah. Like golden doodles.

Rachel Gosling (33:06.628)
Golden Doodles, Labra Doodles, Sheep Doodles, Burna Doodles.

Mark Phillips (33:10.862)
Are are doodles like the new raves? Because like my mom has doodles. She has two. She has two golden doodles. And I think before that it was all about pugs and it was all about Frenchies. And now it seems like everybody’s got a doodle of some sort.

Rachel Gosling (33:24.832)
Yeah. Yeah, it’s all about the doodles now ’cause they’re hypoallergenic. So Yeah. Yeah. I was on the pug thing, I hit a pug. yeah.

Mark Phillips (33:28.918)
Yes, and they they don’t shed, right?

Mark Phillips (33:35.689)
me too. Yeah. Yeah, I just had to put her down like a month ago.

Rachel Gosling (33:42.496)
I’m sorry.

Mark Phillips (33:43.34)
Yeah, now it’s gonna go somber. Now the interview just got really sad. Yeah, I know. I had split her down about a month ago because she was nine and yeah, it sucked. Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (33:45.889)
Yes.

Rachel Gosling (33:55.296)
Yeah, it does suck. I had to put mine down too like two years ago.

Mark Phillips (33:59.523)
How old was yours?

Rachel Gosling (34:01.634)
She’s fourteen.

Mark Phillips (34:02.837)
wow, see sh I I wish Jesse could’ve lived till she was fourteen. I felt like nine was too young.

Rachel Gosling (34:08.873)
Yeah. Yeah, I don’t yeah, mine Timbett Her name. Yeah, that’s she, yeah.

Mark Phillips (34:14.946)
Was it a girl or a boy? She did you have a fond one?

Rachel Gosling (34:21.323)
Yeah.

Mark Phillips (34:21.976)
Yeah. Yeah, Jesse was fond too. Was your pug really fat? ‘Cause Jesse was.

Rachel Gosling (34:27.497)
Yeah, she was, but I li I didn’t like when people said that about her.

Mark Phillips (34:32.174)
I I took Jesse once to they had this Pug Valentine’s Day thing, and it was so cool. I took her to this this place, and there was like forty or fifty different pugs and pug owners, and they were just all running around playing together, and it was like a Valentine’s Day swary for the dogs.

Rachel Gosling (34:36.594)
Ha ha

Rachel Gosling (34:53.783)
Pugs are actually something else when they all get together. They’re it’s I want whatever they’re on because it’s amazing.

Mark Phillips (35:03.436)
Yeah. That’s the thing, right? It’s like I I don’t think that I could have another dog that isn’t a pug. And I don’t know if yours was like Jesse, but man, so many things going on. Like she was allergic to chicken, so I had to have her on like Apiquil all the time. And she’d always get UTIs, so I had to feed her like specific UTI

Hydrolyzed protein food from the vet.

Rachel Gosling (35:34.768)
man. Yeah.

Mark Phillips (35:36.276)
Allergy city, man. It was like never ending vet bills.

Rachel Gosling (35:39.887)
Ugh No, I mean Timbid had cancer but we got we got it removed and then she was she was good. she her back leg stopped working kinda w well. I mean she could still stand up, but she would always fall. And that’s kinda why we did it. But she seemed kinda there. She just she couldn’t hear very well. She couldn’t see very well.

Mark Phillips (36:07.5)
Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (36:09.225)
But she was still feisty. Like she wouldn’t

Mark Phillips (36:11.17)
What kind of cancer did she have?

Rachel Gosling (36:14.541)
it was it was in our colon, I believe. it was stage two, but it was fine. She got we got it removed. We caught it in time. Yeah, she was only like nine when we caught it. Yeah.

Mark Phillips (36:27.478)
That’s good.

Mark Phillips (36:32.16)
wow. Did she get a gray face? Like all the black hair goes gray?

Rachel Gosling (36:38.483)
Honestly, not really. Like she looked young. She looked really good for fourteen

Mark Phillips (36:41.226)
Really? Yeah. Yeah, Jessie w went the same as me. It was funny. Like when I had a black beard, she had a black face. As soon as I started going gray, so did she. Yeah, she was yeah, she man, she was like my best pal. Like I I got her cremated and I have her ashes in a box on my mantelpiece at the house with her name on them and stuff, and I’m like

Rachel Gosling (36:52.703)
Hmm

Rachel Gosling (37:05.479)
Mm-hmm.

Mark Phillips (37:07.904)
And my mom had a pug too, cause when we went to get Jesse, I I found her on Kijiji from a breeder and just on a whim, I was like, ‘Cause I wanted a pug my whole life and I was like, I’m gonna get one today. So I just went out and grabbed her and I brought my mom with me and she was like, yeah, you know, she wasn’t really into pugs because she had we had labs and stuff my whole childhood. Like my mom was a dog breeder, so she’d always breed like chocolate labs and things.

Rachel Gosling (37:21.873)
Ha ha

Rachel Gosling (37:35.953)
Yeah.

Mark Phillips (37:36.655)
So she always liked big dogs and wasn’t super into little dogs. And I I just brought her along. And yeah, as soon as she saw the other pug that was in the carrying case, like it was Jesse and then the other girl, I said to my mom, like, Don’t you want to get the other one? Like, you can’t let her go home. She’s the only one left in the litter. She’s by herself now. And so my mom was like, Yeah, I’ll get the other one. So she bought the other pug. So she had her sisters, so they kind of grew up together. And that was really neat. We used to get them together and

Rachel Gosling (38:03.154)
that’s so cute.

Mark Phillips (38:04.206)
Yeah, and they used to just play and stuff, but yeah, it was super cute.

Rachel Gosling (38:07.398)
Yeah. I love that. Yeah, I think that was the last one in Terriller. I was like, Well I guess I’m taking this one.

Mark Phillips (38:11.128)
Yeah.

Mark Phillips (38:15.35)
Yeah, you can’t leave her by herself, right, when her sister’s going as well.

Rachel Gosling (38:19.566)
Yeah.

Mark Phillips (38:21.762)
But yeah, it’s funny that you mentioned the leg thing. That was exactly why I had to put Jesse down, was that her legs started going. I took her to the vet and they did like a an x-ray for her, and they said that they think she had some sort of I don’t know if it was like something going on with her spine, but it was stopping sending the nerves and the and the detection down to her legs. And so they said she can’t really feel her back end anymore, so she couldn’t

Rachel Gosling (38:43.772)
Mm.

Mark Phillips (38:48.974)
Couldn’t come up and down the stairs anymore. I had to carry her and then started having accidents. She started going poo and pee in places ’cause she didn’t know when it was time.

Rachel Gosling (38:52.187)
Mm-hmm.

Rachel Gosling (38:55.683)
Yep. Yep, that was mine too.

Mark Phillips (38:59.458)
Yeah. I think it’s a common thing, right? Like lots of people put them on those wheelchairs on the back with their legs straight out.

Rachel Gosling (39:06.512)
Yeah, I had one of those for her, but she didn’t know how to work it, so I just carried her around.

Mark Phillips (39:09.154)
Did you? I wanted to get one for Jesse. I was planning on it, but she just her legs kept deteriorating to a point where I’m like, I feel like an asshole for keeping her alive. Like I asked the vet, I She doesn’t seem like she’s in pain though. She seems like she’s still good. And he said, She’s not gonna really show you that she’s in pain. She’s putting on a brave face and kind of grinning and bearing it because you know that’s what they do.

Rachel Gosling (39:23.32)
Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (39:35.33)
Yeah. Yeah, that was the same as mine. I don’t think so. just because I don’t know, they don’t it’s the walking thing too. Like she was so difficult for walk, she did not want to go for walks ever. And she was very feisty with other dogs. Yeah, I mean she was good with my boxer. We had a boxer that

Mark Phillips (39:37.228)
Yeah. Yeah. Would you ever get another one?

Mark Phillips (39:54.904)
Yeah.

Mark Phillips (39:58.542)
really?

Rachel Gosling (40:04.566)
She like grew up with them, but when we had to put her down, she was like absolutely not.

Yeah. I don’t know.

Mark Phillips (40:13.794)
Did she growl did she growl at other dogs and stuff when they went for walks? Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (40:17.807)
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That’s okay.

Mark Phillips (40:23.726)
It’s funny ’cause pugs have no idea how small and how weak they are.

Rachel Gosling (40:29.355)
I know. I mean now I have I have a pity lab now and Timba used to like run after her and like bite her ankles like in a ferocious way. I’m like she could destroy you. What are you doing? Yeah.

Mark Phillips (40:37.634)
Ha ha ha ha ha.

Right? She just stepped on you and squished you. Yeah.

Yeah, that’s how Jesse was. when I lived in an apartment for a while with her, I had her and and some of the other tenants, they one guy in particular had like a huge pit bull and it was like he was massive. And he had to like hold him hold him back all the time and Jesse’d be like And I’m like, Jesse, that dog would eat you for breakfast.

Rachel Gosling (41:01.199)
Mm.

Rachel Gosling (41:05.197)
Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (41:08.599)
Yeah. Yeah. They don’t care. They’re like I’m literally the size of that dog, so what do you say?

Mark Phillips (41:11.245)
No.

But yeah, the most loyal dog ever, man. Like they they they’re so good. Like Jesse used to follow me everywhere, like even going to the bathroom. She’s sitting in the bathroom with me, and like you can’t go anywhere without her.

Rachel Gosling (41:28.703)
No. No. She’s she was great. I I also I can’t have another pug because she was just the best pug. Yeah.

Mark Phillips (41:37.056)
Right. Yeah. Yeah, and lots of people now are like, pugs you can’t have ’cause they’re it’s not right having a pug. They’re you know, they have so many health problems, they’ve been bred into but it’s like, yeah, but they’re so cute and they’re awesome and they’re like the most loyal dogs ever.

Rachel Gosling (41:54.743)
They are. They really are.

Mark Phillips (41:58.435)
Yeah. I love all those brackie breeds, all the dogs with the squished face. They’re all my favorite. Like I’d love to get a Frenchie as well, but I think Frenchies have similar issues.

Rachel Gosling (42:09.101)
God I I don’t think I’d ever get a Frenchie. My my uncle has a Frenchie and he is just he looks like a bullfrog and he’s just too crazy. Like he’s like a bowling ball with legs.

Mark Phillips (42:18.528)
Yeah.

Mark Phillips (42:24.814)
He has so much energy.

Rachel Gosling (42:27.048)
It’s crazy. And he also thinks he’s ferocious.

Mark Phillips (42:30.904)
Ha ha ha.

And they also have the worst farts. Their farts smell like death.

Rachel Gosling (42:38.571)
Probably ’cause they shouldn’t be. I love them. I like whenever I see one, I’m like, my god. But I couldn’t have one. I definitely couldn’t have

Mark Phillips (42:40.631)
My sister.

Mark Phillips (42:50.828)
My sister has one named Elvis and he’s he’s cool. He’s like he’s a charcoal one and he’s super muscular. He looks he looks like a pig on steroids, so I call him juice pig. That’s my nickname for him. Every time I see him, like, hey juice pig. But he he has the worst farts ever. Like you pick him up and he just drops one and it smells like death in the house.

Rachel Gosling (42:57.13)
Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (43:04.267)
Mm.

Rachel Gosling (43:07.797)
That’s so funny.

Mark Phillips (43:18.008)
It’s awful. And then my girlfriend Jolie and her parents have a pug not a pug, a friend she named Stella. And she’s older and she’s black and white. Same thing. I was holding her and petting her on Christmas time and oof, just letting them go.

Rachel Gosling (43:33.937)
No, that’s awful.

Mark Phillips (43:34.626)
Yeah. I know this is supposed to be a horror and metal podcast, but I think that, you know, Frenchy farts probably fit in good with horror anyway.

Rachel Gosling (43:44.005)
yeah, it was horrific.

Mark Phillips (43:45.388)
They are horrific indeed, yeah. So that’s a cool gig. You have a job that where you actually get to like hang out and look after animals all day.

Rachel Gosling (43:54.398)
Yeah. Yeah, it’s pretty great. Yeah. Yeah, and then when I’m house sitting I can just draw, so

Mark Phillips (43:57.368)
That’s sweet. Yeah.

Mark Phillips (44:02.764)
Yeah, you could do all your artwork, right? So how does it work with being on Etsy? Do they do they take a chunk of the money for having it on there and how does it work?

Rachel Gosling (44:05.332)
Mm.

Rachel Gosling (44:14.946)
yeah, they take a percentage. I can’t remember what the percentage is right now, but they do take a percentage. And I don’t I’m not a huge fan of the Etsy. I wanna find something else because at least to my knowledge, they don’t pay for shipping, so like but like the people pay for shipping. So I only get what my actual product is worth. And then Etsy gets the shipping for some reason. And then

Mark Phillips (44:43.084)
that’s weird.

Rachel Gosling (44:44.732)
I don’t get the shipping. So I don’t know. Maybe I’m doing it wrong, but

Mark Phillips (44:46.455)
Right.

Mark Phillips (44:51.128)
So how so how does it work when somebody places an order? Are are all of your your clothes and all of your different merchandise that you sell, is it all like made to order or do you have stock? How does that work?

Rachel Gosling (45:02.824)
I right now I have I have the pieces that I’ve made up there. I don’t have some things on there just because they’re at the cafe. but yeah, a lot of the things I I encourage people to message me for a specific design they want. I haven’t put a custom one up there because people message me for like the most ridiculous things. Like and I just

If if you can message me on my Instagram or even on Etsy, then I can like determine. But like the whole custom thing doesn’t work for me that way.

Mark Phillips (45:44.044)
What’s the most ridiculous request you’ve got? Give us a good one.

Rachel Gosling (45:47.224)
My god. Well it’s not even like cre I don’t know, like this one guy asked me to do his black cat on a black shirt with bleach and I’m like

I there’s no way but like he was very specific about what he wanted, like the angles and everything. And I’m and it’s like I sir, I I can do it, but I mean like I need to do it the way I can do it. I can’t just do it like a picture in your head, like I don’t think people understand that bit of it. But whatever.

Mark Phillips (46:13.11)
Is

Mark Phillips (46:27.235)
Yeah.

Mark Phillips (46:33.484)
I I think that’s one of the most probably the most difficult and obnoxious things about being in the business of creativity is dealing with people’s interpretations or instructions of how they think something should be done.

Rachel Gosling (46:43.032)
Mm.

Rachel Gosling (46:50.968)
Yeah, and it’s like that’ll look terrible. Just let me at least let me show you how I think

Mark Phillips (46:53.548)
Right. I had a I had a lady once I had a lady once when I was designing sites for a living and she literally built her website in Microsoft Word and sent it to me and said, just build it like this. I want it to look exactly like this.

Rachel Gosling (47:08.042)
wow.

Mark Phillips (47:14.912)
And I was like, no, this is not professional. This is not how we do this. You know, let me make you a proper site with all the stuff in the right places where people expect and best practices and all that good stuff. And she was like, no, no. I’m the customer. I’m paying. So just make it in just how it looks in Word. So I did. I created it exactly the same and sent it to her. And it didn’t do well. She didn’t get many sales from it and it was a disaster. But I’m like, that’s what you wanted.

Rachel Gosling (47:43.342)
That’s crazy. People are nuts. I can’t.

Mark Phillips (47:44.532)
Yeah. Mm-hmm.

Rachel Gosling (47:50.712)
The album covers too. People always want album covers on a t shirt. But like I can’t do specific things. So like you need to work with me a bit here. I do my best though.

Mark Phillips (48:01.667)
Yeah.

That’s that’s a really good point that you raise. So with doing things that are like licensed properties and whatnot, how do you get around the licensing issues and all that sort of stuff?

Rachel Gosling (48:14.648)
I d I don’t know, I just kinda do it and hope for the best.

Mark Phillips (48:16.782)
Does does anybody ever have you ever gotten any messages from anyone or?

Rachel Gosling (48:23.342)
Well, I mean Etsy Etsy does something, so like I can’t post some of my like a lot of Beetlejuice things I can’t post on Etsy. But I can get around it if I can just write like like black and white striped dead man or something like that. Yeah.

Mark Phillips (48:31.34)
Okay.

Mark Phillips (48:40.095)
Right, right.

Yeah, that’s that’s a pain because when we when we had the shop we we used to do that too. We used to make our own shirts and silkscreen them and print them and for all different types of horror movies. And you know, you can’t r i it’s so difficult now. I can’t even get inventory from other other distributors and wholesalers anymore because they’re all like we’re not even licensed to sell this stuff in Canada.

So like I approached, I think it was Cavity Colors, because they have wicked shirts. And I was like, I want to order a whole bunch of shirts from you guys wholesale because I’m going to be selling them on Graveside. And they’re like, can’t ship to Canada. And I said, What do mean? I’ve bought shirts from you before. They’re like, Yeah, but individually for retail, we can license and ship to Canada because we bought the licenses here. But he’s like, we can’t send you wholesale pricing to sell them in Canada because we don’t have licenses for Canada.

Rachel Gosling (49:39.178)
Mm.

Rachel Gosling (49:42.656)
wow.

Mark Phillips (49:45.25)
Yeah, it really sucks ’cause licensing is expensive too. You have

Rachel Gosling (49:45.484)
Well, I mean the thing I only do individual shirts.

Mark Phillips (49:50.235)
Yeah, and you have to go to these licensing conventions and buy the licensing from different studios and stuff. And some of them want like a hundred grand up front in order to have the rights to sell their stuff. And it’s like, well, where is that gonna come from?

Rachel Gosling (49:51.477)
Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (50:04.13)
Yeah, that’s insane. Yeah, exactly.

Mark Phillips (50:09.386)
Yeah, it’s not very good. But yeah, that’s that’s kind of the world we live in now. I think everybody’s looking to sue everybody else.

Rachel Gosling (50:13.753)
Mm.

Rachel Gosling (50:20.928)
Yeah, I mean it’s kind of what it’s come down to,

Mark Phillips (50:27.272)
Mm-hmm. It’s even worse, I think, with sports teams, if you’re designing like cases for hockey teams and things, who the NHL comes down harder fast on those, like with cease and desist orders and stuff.

Rachel Gosling (50:35.911)
yeah.

Rachel Gosling (50:41.472)
gosh.

I don’t deal with that.

Mark Phillips (50:46.99)
Do you have any nightmare on Elm Street like Freddy stuff?

Rachel Gosling (50:58.666)
Got a coaster. That’s it. Yeah. I yeah.

Mark Phillips (51:00.173)
Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (51:08.134)
Yeah, I can’t think of anything else that I’ve done for it. Nobody ever wants it really. Sorry?

Mark Phillips (51:11.182)
Do you like doing nightmare on Elm Street stuff?

Do you like Nightmare in Elm Street?

Rachel Gosling (51:17.716)
I love it. Yeah, that’s one of my favorites. Yeah. It’s a good one. I have the sweater.

Mark Phillips (51:20.462)
Mine too.

Yeah. Yeah. What’s that?

Rachel Gosling (51:27.752)
I have the sweater, the Freddie sweater. Yeah.

Mark Phillips (51:29.08)
nice. Sweet, sweet. Yeah, I used to sell the glove back in the day in the store. I I ordered I custom ordered the glove from Dream Master from number four from a guy that made it.

Rachel Gosling (51:42.158)
yeah.

Mark Phillips (51:42.796)
And it had the metal blades and everything and yeah, it was super cool. I wish I still had it.

Rachel Gosling (51:47.936)
That’s it.

Mark Phillips (51:48.952)
Yeah. I had the Freddy pinball machine too. Did you ever see that back in the day? I think it came out in the eighties or nineties.

Rachel Gosling (51:55.944)
No, I don’t I don’t think so.

Mark Phillips (51:58.083)
It was wicked cause it had Robert Englund’s voice digitized into the pinball machine. So he would say like all these funny lines. And it was awesome. It had Freddie’s head and you could shoot the ball into his mouth and then he would like spit the ball back out.

Rachel Gosling (52:02.3)
yeah.

Rachel Gosling (52:13.772)
I think I I think I know. I think I know. Roughly.

Mark Phillips (52:18.454)
Yeah, it’s it was so cool. And Freddie’s claw was on there too and it like swat the ball away with his claw.

Rachel Gosling (52:24.487)
Yeah. that’s cool, yeah.

Mark Phillips (52:26.573)
Yeah.

Yeah, the Freddy stuff is the best. I think Nightmare on Elm Street is my favorite horror franchise of all time. The Robert Englund one’s not that remake.

Rachel Gosling (52:35.397)
Yeah. No. No, no. No, I like the evil dead. But specifically I like the two thousand thirteen one. Yeah.

Mark Phillips (52:43.543)
Yes.

Mark Phillips (52:48.014)
Yeah, that one was really good. Yeah. I was expecting the worst because I usually hate remakes and I saw it and I thought this is really good.

Rachel Gosling (52:54.885)
Yeah, that’s probably my favorite one.

Mark Phillips (52:56.982)
Yeah.

The first Evil Dead is my favorite one. No worries. The the very first Evil Dead I like the best because it’s it’s so low budget and dark and gritty and terrifying.

Rachel Gosling (53:10.983)
Yeah, no I like that one too. I don’t think I’ve seen the second one actually.

Mark Phillips (53:12.876)
Yeah. the second one is just like the first one, but it’s like on a way higher budget, but it’s also like far more campy and comedic and the special effects are over the top. It’s really good.

Rachel Gosling (53:22.319)
Mm.

Rachel Gosling (53:25.669)
Okay. Maybe I’ll watch that tonight.

Mark Phillips (53:27.85)
Recommend it. Definitely check out Evil Dead 2. Have you seen the new ones that are in the theater like Evil Dead Rise?

Rachel Gosling (53:31.387)
Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (53:36.187)
Yeah, I actually really liked it. Yeah. She’s really creepy for it. Her the special effects are really good for it. Love it.

Mark Phillips (53:38.07)
It was good, yeah.

Mark Phillips (53:46.702)
Mm.

Yeah, I didn’t know if she was gonna work out well for it ’cause I’d only ever seen her in Vikings before as Ragnar’s wife, so I was like, I don’t know if she’s gonna be good in Evil Dead and she was amazing, like super, super terrifying.

Rachel Gosling (53:57.979)
Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (54:01.444)
Yeah, she was really good in that.

Mark Phillips (54:03.082)
Yeah. The new one’s gonna be good too. Evil Dead Burn that they’re working on. I think they’ve even got another one, like Evil Dead Wrath or something that they’re working on. They’ve got another one going. Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (54:13.833)
nice. I can’t wait for those.

Mark Phillips (54:17.356)
Yeah, it it’s funny too about the about the remake that you mentioned, ’cause I I never thought it would work doing an Evil Dead movie without Bruce Campbell. I’m like, there’s no way.

Rachel Gosling (54:27.396)
Yeah, no, it was really good. I w I didn’t think it was gonna be good either, but

Mark Phillips (54:29.24)
Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (54:33.935)
Best movie. I I think I can say like almost all the words in that movie too. Yeah, I I have it on DVD and I used to rewatch it over and over and over again.

Mark Phillips (54:35.119)
Yeah, are you?

Mark Phillips (54:40.888)
Well that’s how many times you see it.

Mark Phillips (54:49.048)
Well, maybe I’ll watch that one tonight because I haven’t seen that one for a very long time. I haven’t seen it since it came out.

Rachel Gosling (54:56.271)
Yeah. Yeah, you should definitely watch it.

Mark Phillips (54:58.976)
view for a rewatch. I don’t think my girlfriend’s seen it either. So she’ll be into it because it’ll be something new and fresh for sure. Yeah. That’s awesome. So that’s your homework. You watch Evil Dead too. That’ll be cool. So yeah, like with with your art and and everything else, is there any cool projects that you’re working on right now in terms of what you’re designing or and stuff that you’re doing?

Rachel Gosling (55:05.1)
Yeah, perfect.

Rachel Gosling (55:10.807)
Yeah. Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (55:22.712)
I’ve been working on one for a while but i it’s it’s really hard to do it with work and everything. But I have art the clown but he’s looking it’s on a circle canvas and it’s like he’s looking through a doorbell. Yeah. Yeah.

Mark Phillips (55:40.583)
cool. That’s awesome. Is it just his eye looking through the doorbell?

Rachel Gosling (55:47.116)
It’s his face like super close up. Yeah. Like fish eyed, kinda. Yeah.

Mark Phillips (55:49.248)
Okay, cool. That’s awesome.

Yeah, yeah, that’s wicked. One of the things that I wanna do with Graveside is I wanna like set up a shop on there and I wanna like feature local artists stuff on there, like and sell them through there. That would be cool to do. I get emails and and requests a lot to feature horror art on our channel and stuff too. So I’d really like to do that. I’d like to feature some of your stuff and bring it in and like

Rachel Gosling (56:06.615)
Mm-hmm.

Rachel Gosling (56:17.026)
Yeah.

Mark Phillips (56:22.232)
put it on the website and on our Instagram and everything and do whatever we can to help drive more traffic to your Etsy store or wherever else you put stuff on.

Rachel Gosling (56:31.843)
Okay. Yeah, that’d be great. I’d appreciate that. Mm-hmm.

Mark Phillips (56:33.506)
Be cool. Yeah, it’d be cool. And then and then you could I’ll send in a custom order for like a a horror pug creation of some sort. yeah, you wouldn’t need to do much. It’s just like yeah, the eyes. Yeah. Yeah, they’re so cute. I had I had Jesse dressed up as a spider pug for for Halloween one year. I just put a spider outfit on her and all the legs came out and stuff are under belly and underneath and

Rachel Gosling (56:43.279)
my gosh, yes. The eyes bulging out, yeah.

No

Rachel Gosling (57:04.324)
that’s so cute. I had I had Timbit in a panda outfit. Yeah.

Mark Phillips (57:05.474)
Yeah.

Mark Phillips (57:09.484)
Nice. Yeah, they’re cool. They’re cool. Everybody everybody that knew, like whenever they see Jess, they’d be like, he got the dog, like the dog from Men in Black. You probably got that a lot too, right?

Rachel Gosling (57:20.584)
Yeah, yeah. Frank or whatever, I think. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. He’s like, no what? Don’t call her that

Mark Phillips (57:23.49)
Yeah. Yeah, Frank the talking pug.

Ha ha ha.

Yeah. It’s funny, you know, every single person that I’ve interviewed on this podcast has been from eastern Canada or the eastern USA. Not one person from the prairies or the west where I am. I’m like, it’s everybody that’s into cool shit on the east side of the country.

Rachel Gosling (57:43.006)
yeah.

Rachel Gosling (57:47.35)
Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (57:51.561)
It’s

no, yeah. I guess so,

Mark Phillips (57:54.393)
Yeah. May maybe I was born in the wrong province. I don’t know. Yeah. You guys have any cool film festivals and stuff that you go to in Toronto? Do they still do the Rue Morgue Festival of Fear there?

Rachel Gosling (58:09.312)
No, I don’t go to any of but no. ‘Cause it’s it’s too far.

Mark Phillips (58:11.18)
No? Why not?

Mark Phillips (58:17.294)
How f how far away from Toronto do you live?

Rachel Gosling (58:21.949)
Like an a like an hour, fifty minutes. Yeah.

Mark Phillips (58:24.396)
Yeah. And the traffic in Toronto’s pretty nuts.

Rachel Gosling (58:29.15)
Yeah, the four one is terrifying, so I don’t wanna go on that especially on like a Friday or something.

Mark Phillips (58:31.629)
Yeah.

Mark Phillips (58:36.894)
Yeah, yeah. I’ve only been to Toronto once. I went in two thousand and five, I think. And I went for the the Rue Morgue Festival of Fear there. And then we went to Niagara Falls afterwards. And that was cool. That was a fun trip. Yeah, but it was crazy busy. I was like, Holy shit. So much traffic and so much honking that I’ve never heard.

Rachel Gosling (58:53.525)
Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (58:58.516)
Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (59:02.685)
Yeah, there’s a lot of honking. A lot of construction. A lot of honking. A lot of crazy people. Yeah. Yeah. Well I c I could take the train down I guess, but quicker that way.

Mark Phillips (59:04.375)
Yeah.

Lots of concrete.

Mark Phillips (59:15.63)
think when I went they had the Rue Morgue Festival of Fear, it was in the con I don’t know, I think it was just called the Convention Center or something. It was downtown Toronto.

Rachel Gosling (59:24.654)
Yeah. They have a lot of conventions down there. A a lot.

Mark Phillips (59:27.415)
Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (59:33.489)
We have a lot of horror ones. Horror horror con or something, I think.

Mark Phillips (59:38.818)
Yeah, I know they have one in Niagara Falls called Fright Mare in the Falls that our friend Sarah goes to. She was telling us about that one. That’s I think that’s the biggest one in Canada.

Rachel Gosling (59:45.019)
Mm.

Rachel Gosling (59:48.476)
Yeah, I’ve heard of I’ve heard of it. Never been.

Mark Phillips (59:53.494)
What about shows? Do you go to any metal shows?

Rachel Gosling (59:57.222)
I used to. I used to back in the day.

Mark Phillips (01:00:00.015)
You’re not you’re not too old to go now, you know.

Rachel Gosling (01:00:05.528)
No, but I don’t drink anymore, so I don’t I don’t feel like being around a bunch of drunk people.

Mark Phillips (01:00:08.174)
Mark Phillips (01:00:13.07)
True that true. But honestly, like if you go to shows now, I guess it depends on the demographic and the type of bands you like, but the ones I go to are usually like I think the last song we went to is Black Label Society, and it’s all dudes and people around my age, and we just stand at the back and look tough and shake our heads while we’re watching the band. We don’t, you know, go anywhere near the front where the mosh pit or any of the action is anymore. And

Rachel Gosling (01:00:35.259)
Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (01:00:41.317)
Yeah.

Mark Phillips (01:00:42.742)
Not that many people drinking or getting drunk, like just that’s it. Like it was pretty chill.

Rachel Gosling (01:00:49.095)
Yeah. I I mean, yeah. Last last concert I went to was System of the Down, I think. Yeah, that was really good.

Mark Phillips (01:00:57.389)
Yeah.

They probably played at a big, big place in Toronto. Did they play it like Rogers or something?

Rachel Gosling (01:01:05.49)
no, they played at wait, yeah. The new one though, there’s a new one. Not like downtown Toronto, but there’s a new Rogers Stadium. I forget what it’s called. It’s either Rogers Stadi somebody were somebody said it was Rogers Center and then there’s Rogers Stadium.

Mark Phillips (01:01:18.534)
okay.

Mark Phillips (01:01:28.384)
Right. Yeah, Roger Center is the old skydome, right?

Rachel Gosling (01:01:31.512)
Yeah, so people were getting it confused and going there. But yeah.

Mark Phillips (01:01:35.657)
yeah, that is. And here in Edmonton we have Rogers Place and that’s where the new arena is where the Oilers play.

Rachel Gosling (01:01:44.47)
yeah. It’s too many Rogers. Just change the name.

Mark Phillips (01:01:45.4)
Too many Rogers. Yeah, it’s ’cause I think Rogers owns Canada now by this point. Like Rogers slaps their name on everything. This will be Graveside Entertainment presented by Rogers pretty soon. Yeah. So that’s cool. Yeah, it’s it’s been good chatting with you and going through all the stuff. is there anything that you wanna you wanna push and promote while I’ve got you on here before we jump off?

Rachel Gosling (01:01:55.746)
Yeah.

Rachel Gosling (01:02:11.987)
not just my Instagram really, that’s kind of all I really push. It’s just it’s at Rachel Gosling Art.

Mark Phillips (01:02:17.954)
All right, what’s your Instagram?

Mark Phillips (01:02:24.214)
Sweet at Rachel GoslingArt on Instagram. Awesome. Well, thanks a lot for joining us, Rachel. It was a pleasure talking to you and chatting with you about all the stuff. I’ll be in touch to talk about getting your art on the website and creating me a custom horror pug piece of art. All right. Okay, well, thank you, Rachel. Take care and thanks again for joining us. All right, take care, bye.

Rachel Gosling (01:02:43.348)
yes please.

Rachel Gosling (01:02:48.186)
Okay, thanks for having me. See ya.
